AR, an innovative technology to know

Augmented Reality has made a big step forward this year. Generally and until today, this inlay of virtual information could be viewed through a smartphone screen, a touch pad, a pair of glasses or even a helmet. Synchronization of real and virtual elements is made possible thanks to geolocation, the camera or even on-board sensors that allow the user to be located in relation to his environment.

Augmented Reality involves recognition of the image through a camera, then analysis of the data read, and finally the transmission of new data, that is to say the result. Augmented Reality therefore allows recording and reading of the data viewed, by following the eye it sees what the user sees.

Its uses are multiple and can range from video games, training, marketing, but also education, tourism, etc.

The question of data protection

Like any new and innovative technology, its adoption nevertheless raises questions and fears, including that of data protection. Augmented Reality presupposes, in fact, a recording of the necessary data and their analyzes and the dissemination of a result, virtual information.

The question that this implies remains the same as for the other technologies used and which we could no longer do without today, such as the smartphone or the web.Elysse Dick, a researcher working on these issues, recalls that in 1888, when Kodak introduced a camera for everyone on the market, the company allowed its use to amateurs who suddenly invaded the streets to take pictures. The innovation quickly became the object of suspicion, and twenty years later gave rise to a law on image rights in the United States.

" We have the same debate today with Google's Glassholes ," she recalls, "the question is whether it's a problem of social perception, or whether it's a problem that we must look into and regulate. For the researcher,the line between public and private space tends to blur with AR, so care must be taken to ensure that the notion of privacy can be respected and to what extent technology can be used.

Everything is therefore a matter of transparency and choice in the practices for which the service providers are responsible. It is thus a question of being transparent about the data collected by this type of technology and its usefulness. It goes without saying that the capture of the environment is necessary for the operation of the application, just as cookies are necessary for the operation of an e-commerce site for example.

Transparency combined with a better knowledge of AR by these users, whether it is to understand how this technology works, and what data can be interpreted by the mobile device, whether it is a telephone, glasses, tablets or lenses, will be necessary to remove the obstacles to the adoption of a completely innovative and relevant technology.
